Congratulations to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) students Morgan Adams and Demarcus Mobley who were selected as the recipients of the 2021 Monarch Beyond Academics Support Services Scholarship.

The scholarships provide financial assistance for Monarch services that assist with support needed for students enrolled in UNCG’s Beyond Academics program.

In 2017, UNCG partnered with Monarch to provide support services for the University’s Beyond Academics Comprehensive Transition Program. Beyond Academics, which currently has 33 students enrolled, is an Integrative Community Studies (ICS) program and was the first post-secondary program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in North Carolina. Students graduating from Beyond Academics receive a four-year certificate of completion in ICS from UNCG’s Office of the Provost. While engaging in civic and social activities, students enrolled in the Beyond Academics program learn a comprehensive skill set in preparation for becoming active citizens in the communities in which they live.

Students interested in being considered to be awarded the Monarch Support Services Scholarship submit an application which includes an essay and undergo an interview process.

UNCG Freshman Morgan Adams, 20, was honored to be one of two 2021 scholarship award recipients. “I was very happy and surprised. Thank you so much for selecting me for this scholarship,” she said.

Adams, who is from Holly Springs and a 2020 Southern Wake Academy graduate, enjoys campus life, being independent and attending college classes. Residing on campus, Adams takes advantage of participating in a variety of on college events and activities. In between classes, Adams enjoys exercising at the gym and running.

Adams has aspirations for her post-college years and would like to establish a camp for children on her family’s farm. As a young child, Adams attended Camp Indian Princesses and recalls that experience with fond memories. “I have always wanted to be a camp counselor and am interested in that field,” she explained. “I love working with kids and babysitting, I want to find something that I am passionate about and get involved in my community.”

UNCG Senior Demarcus Mobley, 22, was thrilled to be selected as a Monarch Beyond Academics Scholarship recipient. “Receiving the scholarship means a lot to me and will help my mom and I financially to support the sessions that I need. I am grateful to be chosen for the scholarship,” he said.

Mobley relishes all that campus life as to offer and likes to play basketball and video games, as well as participating in on campus activities like pool parties, bonfires and attending sporting events with friends he has known since his freshman year. A graduate of Southern Lee High School in Sanford, Mobley is looking to secure a full-time job after college focusing on computers.

Rounding out his senior year, Mobley has appreciated the Monarch staff’s assistance through the Beyond Academics program and having resources when he needed help with his studies or navigating campus life.

LaSherika Wright, Monarch Post-Secondary Education Support team leader on the UNCG campus, sees firsthand the benefits of supporting students, like Adams and Mobley, enrolled in the Beyond Academics program. She expresses appreciation to the Monarch donors who continue to provide financial support and see the impact such a program provides to students.

“I think it’s great to be able to support our students within the community and afford them the opportunities they deserve due to their hard work and diligence. I’m hopeful to see more opportunities in the future,” she said.

Beyond Academics Support Services Scholarships are made possible each year through proceeds from Monarch’s Annual Dreams Take Flight Golf Tournament and the support of generous individual donors.
