Monarch Joins Groundbreaking for New Behavioral Health Center in Cabarrus County

Monarch officials joined Cabarrus County leaders, community stakeholders and families of people living with mental illness to mark the groundbreaking for the Stephen M. Morris Behavioral Health Center. Monarch has been selected as the provider of the critical mental health services at the center and is partnering with the county to deliver quality mental health care for all.

Now under construction, the 59,300-square-foot facility will provide a comprehensive continuum of mental health support for the region. Services will include a behavioral health urgent care center for children and adults, a child and adolescent psychiatric residential treatment facility and a facility-based crisis program for children and adolescents.

In her remarks during the event, Monarch’s President and CEO Dr. Peggy Terhune noted “There simply are not enough services to meet the growing need for mental health and substance use disorders care our communities face. This center, and the services Monarch will provide here, will directly address those needs for children, adolescents, adults and their families.”

About the Services Offered at the Stephen M. Morris Behavioral Health Center

Child Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC)

The Child Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC) is a walk-in service for young people ages 4 to 17 who are experiencing a mental health or substance use disorder crisis and are in need of immediate support. The service is often an appropriate alternative to an emergency department visit.

BHUC services are designed to provide assessment, stabilization and psychiatric intervention in a safe, healthy environment where recovery can begin. This program is designed to ensure people are linked to most appropriate level of ongoing care to promote continued recovery.

Adult Behavioral Health Urgent Care

The Adult Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC) is a walk-in service for people ages 18 and older who are experiencing a mental health or substance use disorder crisis and are in need of immediate support. The service is often an appropriate alternative to an emergency department visit.

BHUC services are often the first line of care and provide assessment, stabilization and psychiatric intervention in a safe, healthy environment. Adults receiving treatment are linked to most appropriate level of continuing care to support recovery.

Child and Adolescent Facility-Based Crisis Center

Child and Adolescent Facility-Based Crisis services support young people ages 6 to 17, providing stabilization for an acute psychiatric episode during short, typically 5- to 7-day stay. FBC services provide an alternative to an emergency department visit and longer term hospitalization when appropriate.

Under the direction of a psychiatrist and other licensed medical and professional staff, care is provided through short-term therapeutic interventions designed to prevent hospitalization by reducing and stabilizing a child’s crisis. Each young person leaves with the needed resources for on-going care and treatment.

Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility

Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) services provide non-acute, inpatient support for young people under age 21 experiencing a mental illness and/or substance use disorder.

PRTFs provide 24-hour supervision and specialized interventions to help young people begin recovery. Inpatient treatment focuses on de-escalation of crisis, skill building and the involvement of family and community supports. Care is provided under the direction of a psychiatrist and a care team that may include therapists, nurses, occupational therapists and other behavioral health professionals.
