Anthony Green Finds Confidence and Inspiration Through Monarch’s IPS Services
When Anthony Green first joined Monarch’s Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Program, he felt stuck, isolated and unsure of his path forward. A talented digital artist from Beaufort, SC, who moved to Charlotte in 2019, Anthony had struggled with depression, which caused him to withdraw from social activities and lose confidence in his future. However, with the support of Monarch’s IPS program, Anthony’s outlook has transformed, and his passion for art and ambition to return to school have reignited.
The IPS model of Supported Employment services is a person-centered approach designed to help individuals with mental health conditions find meaningful employment and regain stability. It’s not just about job placement — it’s about fostering long-term personal and professional growth. Through Monarch’s IPS program, Anthony was partnered with Michael Thompson, an Employment Peer Mentor (EPM), who has been a key part of Anthony’s recovery journey.
“Anthony was very quiet and reserved when we first met,” Michael recalls. “He had interests and passions, but his depression made it difficult for him to engage with them. Over time, we built trust, starting with shared interests like art and movies, which helped open the door to more serious discussions about his goals.”
Building Confidence Through Connection
One of the most significant turning points for Anthony was attending an art exposition and the remake of one of his favorite childhood movies, “Twisters”, with Michael. These activities were more than just outings — they reignited Anthony’s love for creativity and inspired him to pursue a new goal: going back to school for broadcasting and production technology at Central Piedmont Technical Community College.
Reflecting on how the program has impacted his life, Anthony said, “I wasn’t serious about going back to school at first, but as time went by, I got more serious, and Michael was encouraging.” The IPS program also helped Anthony create a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), a personalized tool that allows him to manage his mental health effectively. This plan has given Anthony a framework to recognize and navigate his emotions, ensuring that he stays on track both personally and professionally.
Employment and Mental Health: A Path to Recovery
Employment plays a crucial role in mental health recovery. As highlighted by experts, having a job provides structure, purpose and a sense of accomplishment, all of which contribute to improving quality of life. Monarch’s IPS services focus on helping individuals like Anthony take small but significant steps toward stability, whether through finding a job, returning to school or reconnecting with passions that improve mental well-being.
Anthony’s experience with the IPS program has been fulfilling. “I’m glad I joined the program. It’s been rewarding,” he shares. With the help of Monarch’s IPS program and Michael’s ongoing mentorship, Anthony is preparing to enroll in school next spring to pursue his passion for broadcasting. He continues to work on his goals, while staying connected to his art, managing his mental health, and looking toward a bright future.
