Though the research is limited, studies show that people with I/DD struggle with more mental health conditions than those who are not disabled. At the same time, many with I/DD do not have access to appropriate mental healthcare in their community. These conditions may include anxiety, depression or behavioral disorders, and the symptoms can often be more challenging to identify or diagnose due to communication barriers or the complexity of their needs. Unfortunately, many individuals with I/DD lack access to appropriate mental healthcare in their communities, making their struggles even more difficult.
Mental health care is crucial for people with I/DD. Untreated mental health conditions can impact their overall well-being, social relationships and ability to function in daily life. Without proper care and support, individuals may experience a decline in their quality of life, struggle with increased isolation or have difficulty participating in school, work and social activities.
As a leading provider of both behavioral healthcare and I/DD support, Monarch is expanding awareness of and access to mental healthcare for the I/DD community with different programs and services to meet people where they are.
