Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. These mood swings are more intense than the usual ups and downs everyone experiences. A person with bipolar disorder can feel very happy and energetic for a period (called mania or hypomania) and then feel very sad or hopeless at other times (called depression). The changes in mood aren’t always in a predictable pattern, and they can affect a person’s ability to function in daily life.
Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder:
- Manic or Hypomanic Symptoms: During a manic episode, a person may feel overly happy, energetic, or irritable. They might talk faster than usual, sleep less, and take risky actions like spending money impulsively or making unwise decisions.
- Depressive Symptoms: During a depressive episode, a person may feel very sad, hopeless, or empty. They may lose interest in activities they once enjoyed, feel very tired, or have trouble concentrating.
These mood swings can be very difficult to manage, but with proper treatment, including medication and therapy, people with bipolar disorder can have periods of stability.
