Anthony Blount is one of many individuals supported by Monarch who seizes every opportunity to give back. Outside his regular job, Blount dedicates at least 10 hours each week to volunteering in the community.

At Tryon Palace in New Bern, Blount helps shred documents and assists with the museum’s events by cleaning and storing costumes. Every second Thursday, he’s at St. Peter’s Church, organizing donations after clothing drives. You can also find his work keeping St. Steven’s Church tidy.

When the regular literacy volunteer at Pamlico County Public Library took a vacation, Blount stepped up without prompting to lead a reading session. He showed pictures of the story to the audience, ensuring everyone could follow along.

“Anthony stepped in and showed such dedication. The library has always been supportive of us, hosting card-making activities and reading groups for our day program,” said April Judson, Community Engagement Team Leader at Monarch.

National Volunteer Week Celebrates Giving Back

National Volunteer Week recognizes the individuals who volunteer their time and talents to strengthen their communities. The people supported by Monarch give back year-round, making a significant impact across North Carolina.

In 2016, those supported by Monarch contributed 26,546.75 volunteer hours statewide, with an economic impact of $580,842.89.

“More than 26,000 volunteer hours demonstrate that the people we support not only want to give back to their communities but also help change perceptions,” said Jim Kelley, Monarch’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “This shows that people with disabilities can be givers, not just recipients, in our society.”

Volunteering Creates Opportunities for Growth and Connection

Volunteering is a key part of Monarch’s mission to help people with disabilities form meaningful connections within their communities. It allows those supported by Monarch to develop new skills, build relationships and make a difference in their local areas.

“Volunteerism is central to the lives of the people we support. It gives them a chance to learn and practice skills, help others and strengthen their sense of belonging,” said Judson. “It’s as important to them as it is to me to have meaningful work in the community.”
