When a family feels they have come to a point of crisis with a child or young adult ages 3 to 20 experiencing mental health problems, Intensive In-Home Services (IIHS) can help.
Monarch’s IIHS Team can help manage a child’s behavior by assisting and empowering families in developing problem-solving skills and accessing community resources where support may be available.
Intensive in-home mental health services focus on providing specialized support to address emotional and behavioral challenges in the home environment. These services are designed for children who may be struggling with severe mental health issues and typically include:
- Individual Therapy: One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist to address specific mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.
- Family Therapy: Engaging the whole family to improve relationships, communication, and support systems, helping to address dynamics that impact the child’s mental health.
- Crisis Intervention: Immediate support for children experiencing a mental health crisis, aimed at stabilizing the situation and developing a safety plan.
- Behavioral Interventions: Strategies tailored to modify problematic behaviors, often using techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
- Psychoeducation: Educating the child and family about mental health issues, treatment options, and coping strategies to empower them in managing symptoms.
- Skill-Building Activities: Focusing on social skills, emotional regulation, and coping strategies to help children manage their feelings and behaviors effectively.
- Support for Daily Functioning: Assisting with routines, schoolwork, and daily activities to ensure the child can thrive in their environment.
- Coordination of Care: Collaborating with schools, pediatricians, and other professionals to create a comprehensive support plan for the child.
These services are often delivered by a team of professionals, including therapists, social workers, and case managers, and are customized to meet the specific needs of the child and family.

Eligibility
Intensive In-Home Services (IIHS) serves children, adolescents and young adults ages 3 to 20 who meet these criteria:
- A youth has a mental health or substance use disorder diagnosis, but does not only have an intellectual or developmental disability.
- According to a recent assessment, this service is needed because outpatient treatment was tried before but didn’t work or wasn’t the right choice.
- The youth shows signs of needing immediate help, such as thoughts of hurting themselves or others, acting aggressively, hurting themselves or taking serious risks like running away or using drugs.
- Their symptoms and behaviors are too difficult to handle at home, school or in the community because their mental health or substance use has gotten worse. This means they need intense, coordinated help.
- The youth is at high risk of being placed outside of their home because of their current mental health or substance abuse issues, or they are already in an outside placement and might return home soon.
- There’s no evidence that other types of help would work better, based on guidelines from North Carolina and leading mental health organizations.
