LaVonna Avent has been part of the Monarch team for more than four years, serving as a Developmental Specialist Vocational at the Bladen Opportunities Unlimited day program. In her role, she helps the people we support build everyday skills, gain independence and engage in their community.

Beyond her daily responsibilities, LaVonna also collects the content for the program’s newsletter — capturing thoughtful stories and stunning photographs that have become a favorite among the people we support and their caregivers. Her dedication, creativity and genuine care shine through in every interaction, making her a valued member of both the BOU family and the wider Monarch team.

We are proud to highlight LaVonna during DSP Recognition Week as we celebrate the impact and commitment of Direct Support Professionals across Monarch.

BACKGROUND AND ROLE

Q: How long have you been with Monarch and what led you to become a Direct Support Professional (DSP)?
A: I’ve been with Monarch for 4.5 years.

Q: What drew you to this kind of work and what continues to inspire you to do it each day?
A: I’ve always been drawn to helping others and mental health has always been one of my passions.

Q: Can you describe what a typical day looks like in your role?
A: A typical day includes morning exercise, volunteering at the Crisis Center, community integration, playing games that encourage thinking while still being fun, having discussions on different topics, working on crafts, eating lunch, promoting independence and teaching life skills.

CONNECTION AND IMPACT

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with the people we support?
A: I enjoy the interactions most — we teach each other new things and learn from one another every day.

Q: Can you share a meaningful or memorable moment from your time as a DSP?
A: When I transferred to BOU, I loved how everyone accepted me and welcomed me into the BOU family. Becoming a QP was also very meaningful for me.

Q: How do you help create a safe and supportive environment for the people you work with?
A: I create a safe and supportive environment by setting clear expectations, fostering positive relationships, encouraging open communication, respecting diversity and providing emotional support. These strategies help build an atmosphere where people feel they belong, are encouraged to participate and can grow in both independence and confidence.

Q: Monarch focuses on helping people live the lives they choose — how do you support that goal in your role?
A: I support that goal by helping people learn and improve basic everyday skills such as counting money, writing, and reading. I also hold monthly Q&A forums to discuss individual rights.

AWARENESS AND ADVICE

Q: What’s one thing you wish more people understood about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
A: I wish people understood that we are more alike than different and that people with disabilities don’t need to be fixed but loved and respected.

Q: What advice would you give someone thinking about becoming a DSP?
A: The advice I would give is to not go into the job thinking you are better or above anyone else. No matter your role, age or position, you can always learn something from the people around you.

Q: What makes you proud to be part of the Monarch team?
A: The people we support make me the proudest to be part of Monarch.
