Finding the right job can be challenging, especially when balancing personal and professional goals. With support from Monarch’s Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program in Gaston County, Shakil Jefferson discovered a career that fits his skills and needs.

Jefferson’s journey began in 2013 when he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Communication at North Carolina State University. The stress of college, combined with a personal family challenge, led to a mental health crisis that resulted in hospitalization.

“I was diagnosed with social anxiety and psychosis,” Jefferson shared. “Balancing school and personal challenges led to my hospitalization. But I had a strong support system that helped me return to school and graduate in 2014.”

After college, Jefferson received mental health services in South Carolina. When he and his mother relocated to Gastonia in 2018, he connected with Monarch’s behavioral health services for therapy and medication management to continue his progress.

As he worked on his personal growth, Jefferson wanted to build his professional skills. In 2019, he joined Monarch’s IPS program, where he partnered with a Monarch employment support professional to explore career options that fit his strengths and goals.

Finding the Right Fit

Through Monarch’s IPS employment services, Jefferson worked on interview skills, communication techniques and job searching. Given his discomfort in large crowds and transportation challenges, he and his employment support professional focused on remote job opportunities.

“Shakil is more comfortable in smaller settings,” his Monarch support professional explained. “We focused on mock interviews, job coaching and career planning to help him gain confidence.”

Although Jefferson faced setbacks during the job search, he remained motivated. After nine months, he secured a position on Apple, Inc.’s Technical Support team, a highly competitive role where only 20 people were hired from hundreds of applicants. As a technical support specialist, he helps customers troubleshoot their devices. Thanks to his strong performance and reliability, Jefferson has already received a promotion and a raise.

Building a Career with Monarch’s IPS Program

“Monarch’s IPS services felt more personal and collaborative compared to other programs I’ve tried,” Jefferson said. “They invested in my success, provided valuable resources, and helped prepare me for this opportunity.”

His Monarch support professional emphasized the importance of support and encouragement in job placement: “Shakil didn’t need much professional training — he just needed someone in his corner to help build his confidence.”

Now thriving in his role, Jefferson sees long-term career potential with Apple. “Monarch helped me find a job where I can grow,” he said. “I feel confident in my future.”
