One of the most inspiring examples of how UMAR, now a part of Monarch, has transformed lives is Helen Fleming, a resident of UMAR’s Myers Park Home in Charlotte, NC. Helen’s story is one of overcoming challenges, discovering her potential, and finding a sense of purpose that resonates through her work and life.
Helen’s story began in December 1989, when she, along with five other women, became one of the first residents to move into UMAR’s Myers Park Home. For Helen’s family, this was a monumental shift, a transition from years of caregiving and advocacy from her parents to the broader support of a community. Helen’s sister, Ann Bourgeois, recalls the overwhelming emotions that accompanied this change:
“We were apprehensive, full of fear and uncertainty. Would Helen be safe? Would she be happy? Was this the right decision? And finally, would this be a success for her?”
Ann and her family had always been Helen’s advocates, especially their mother, who had guided her through medical challenges and an educational journey that was anything but ordinary. But as Helen moved into the UMAR home, her family began to witness the profound impact this new environment would have on her.
At Monarch, we recognize that every individual deserves a life of dignity, independence and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society. For Helen, UMAR provided a supportive, structured environment that allowed her to thrive and achieve growth beyond what her family ever imagined.
Ann shares, “We could never have imagined the environment Helen would grow into. She was always so sweet, sensitive and loving, but the social and independence opportunities that UMAR provided her were beyond our wildest dreams. She has not only formed meaningful, lasting friendships but has also grown as an individual, finding confidence and independence she never had before.”
One of the most significant milestones in Helen’s life was the opportunity to work. Before joining UMAR, Helen’s social network and activities were limited. She spent much of her time at home, participating in occasional lessons with her younger sister, Joanie. But through Monarch’s comprehensive services, Helen was given the chance to pursue meaningful work. She began a job at Providence United Methodist Church in 2005, and it has been a perfect fit.
Her role at the church has allowed Helen to build a strong sense of purpose. Ann notes, “Helen’s job placement is nothing short of miraculous. The staff at the church constantly express their appreciation for her work. She has learned valuable office skills and continues to contribute meaningfully to the success of UMAR’s work. We never could have imagined her in this role, thriving the way she does.”
Helen’s work is not only a job — it’s an essential part of her identity. The church staff recognizes the positive energy and dedication she brings to every task. From managing office responsibilities to helping with day-to-day operations, Helen’s contributions are both valued and celebrated. She is an essential part of the team, embodying the values of kindness, reliability, and dedication that Monarch strives to instill in all the individuals we support.
But Helen’s growth isn’t limited to her job. Through Monarch’s holistic approach to care, she has flourished socially as well. Her social calendar is packed with enriching activities, from music therapy and swimming to church events and outings. These experiences allow her to engage with her peers, build friendships, and create lasting memories. Helen’s life is full and her sense of belonging is deepened by her role in the community — something her family could not have provided on their own.
For Ann, seeing Helen’s transformation has been nothing short of miraculous:
“Without Monarch, I often wonder what Helen would be doing. Would she be developing her skills? Would she have the self-confidence she has today? Would she have the sense of belonging she now feels in her life? We are so deeply grateful for the impact Monarch has had on Helen’s life. She has truly found her place, and she is thriving in ways that we could have never dreamed of.”
Helen’s story is one of immense growth, independence and joy — a story that Monarch is proud to be a part of. Thanks to the support and care provided through UMAR and Monarch, Helen is living a full life, contributing to her community and thriving in her role at Providence United Methodist Church. It’s a testament to the power of holistic care and a nurturing community where individuals can truly shine.
As Ann reflects on her sister’s journey, she concludes with a message of deep gratitude:
“Our family is so blessed that Helen has found not just a home, but a family at UMAR, and now Monarch. We could never have provided the support she receives here. Watching her blossom into an independent, confident adult has been a dream come true for all of us. UMAR has truly given Helen a second lease on life.”
