As summer winds down and school supply lists take center stage many parents find themselves grappling with a mix of emotions. Whether it’s panic, reluctance or even relief, the transition to an empty nest or seeing a first child off to college is a significant life change.

According to Monarch experts, such transitions are a natural part of life, comparable to getting married, starting a family or beginning a new job. Saying goodbye to a teenager heading to college can be anxiety-inducing but doesn’t have to be a negative experience.

Here are some tips to help parents cope and find the positives in this life stage.

1. Accept the timing

It’s important to resist comparing your child’s timeline to your own past experiences or expectations. Allow them to take responsibility for themselves as they enter this new chapter.

“Focus on helping your child succeed once they leave home and take it one day at a time,” said one Monarch therapist.

2. Stay Connected

Scheduling regular check-ins with your college student can maintain a healthy connection. “Just because your child moves away doesn’t mean they stop being part of your life,” Monarch professionals emphasize. “Thanks to today’s technology — texting, video calls and apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp — it’s easier than ever to stay in touch.”

3. Build a support system

When the home becomes quieter and less hectic, reaching out to friends and family can ease the transition.

“Share your feelings with trusted loved ones,” experts suggest. “If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider seeking guidance from a doctor or mental health provider.”

4. Embrace the positives

While a child leaving home may evoke sadness, it also opens the door to new opportunities.

“This time in life can allow parents to explore personal interests, hobbies or even focus on their relationships,” Monarch professionals explain. “Staying optimistic and building a support system of family and friends can help you navigate this new chapter.”
