With Monarch CEO Peggy Terhune, Ph.D., MBA, OTR/L

Monarch, a leading statewide provider of services for individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities in North Carolina and Rhode Island, has successfully integrated occupational therapy (OT) into its comprehensive behavioral health treatment services. These innovative services support the treatment of mental illness, substance use disorders and developmental disabilities, assisting individuals in achieving successful recovery and personal growth.

“Occupational therapy services play an important role in mental health treatment and recovery. We have created a holistic, occupational therapy program that serves both the people we support and as a model for other mental health practices,” said Dr. Peggy Terhune, Monarch’s president and CEO, who is an OT professional by training.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession focused on helping people of all ages live their best lives. It does this by teaching skills and providing tools that allow individuals to perform everyday activities — or “occupations” — that are important to them. This can include tasks like getting dressed, preparing meals or working at a job. Occupational therapists work with people to overcome challenges caused by injuries, illnesses or disabilities.

Occupational therapy is about more than just physical recovery — it’s about empowering people to live meaningful lives. Whether someone is recovering from an injury, managing a mental illness or living with a developmental disability, OT helps them achieve their goals. Through customized care and support, occupational therapy gives people the confidence and ability to overcome challenges and thrive.

The Role of OT in Behavioral Health Treatment and Support

For people living with mental illness, OT can be life changing. Mental illnesses like depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder can make daily life feel overwhelming. An occupational therapist helps by teaching coping strategies and creating routines to reduce stress. For example, someone with anxiety might learn relaxation techniques or ways to manage their time better.

Occupational therapy also focuses on building self-confidence and social skills. Therapists might help someone rejoin the workforce, connect with community programs or develop hobbies that bring joy and purpose. By addressing mental health in this way, OT helps individuals regain control over their lives.

Intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) can affect how a person learns, communicates and takes care of themselves. Occupational therapy is essential for people with I/DD because it provides the tools and support they need to be as independent as possible.

For instance, an occupational therapist might work with a child who has autism to improve their motor skills or help them use assistive technology for communication. For adults, OT can focus on life skills like cooking, shopping or using public transportation. The goal is to make everyday tasks easier and help individuals participate fully in their communities.

Monarch’s Vision for the Future

While OT services are traditionally thought of in relation to recovery from injury or illness, Monarch is demonstrating how it can also play an important role in treating mental illness and substance use disorders. By helping patients care for themselves, engage in meaningful work and social activities and participate in the community, OT supports holistic recovery.

“We know occupational therapy services can positively impact treatment, recovery and personal growth. This model will be a shining example of how innovative care can improve lives,” said Dr. Terhune.
