A young girl at the SECU Youth Crisis Center, a Monarch program in Charlotte, participates in an occupational therapy exercise to support her recovery.

How Occupational Therapy Helps Children Thrive

Posted on April 22, 2021

Occupational therapy (OT) is often associated with adults recovering from illness or injury, but it also plays a transformative role in helping children and adolescents build the skills they need to navigate life. At Monarch, OT is integrated into care for children healing from mental health challenges, offering tailored interventions to support their growth and well-being.

Occupational Therapy Supports Skill Development

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) defines OT as helping individuals participate in everyday activities (occupations) through therapeutic techniques. For children, these activities may include self-care routines, social interactions, writing or holding and controlling a pencil. A 2020 review by the AOTA highlighted that OT interventions can significantly improve cognitive, motor, social-emotional and self-care skills in youth.

At Monarch, occupational therapists provide personalized care to meet each child’s unique needs. Monarch experts explain that therapy goals often focus on building self-care skills, emotional regulation and social engagement. For example, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is one method therapists use to help children understand therapeutic techniques. Visual aids, such as images illustrating breathing exercises, help children grasp and practice calming strategies.

This graphic (Right), reprinted from Early Years Learning, illustrates an example of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), which uses an image to help a child better understand what their occupational therapist is teaching.

Helping Children Overcome Crisis and Thrive

Monarch’s SECU Youth Crisis Center (SECU YCC) in Charlotte provides a safe space for children and adolescents to stabilize during crises. Treatment plans are designed to help youth transition back to their homes or connect them with resources to succeed in their daily lives.

“Occupational therapy is about finding success in life’s tasks — whether it’s getting dressed, managing emotions, or learning to navigate relationships,” explains Monarch’s experts. “Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and OT provides them with the tools to do so.”

Monarch began integrating occupational therapy into mental health and substance use treatment in 2020 at its Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in Stanly County. By addressing both mental health and practical life skills, OT ensures individuals have the support they need to live independently and confidently.

Occupational therapy helps children and teens not just recover from mental health challenges but also build a foundation for long-term success. By focusing on essential life skills and addressing each child’s specific needs, OT empowers them to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
