Attendees at Monarch’s day programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) can explore potential job opportunities using CreateAbility, an educational software designed to help individuals identify areas of interest and pursue meaningful careers.

Many of our day program participants currently work or volunteer in their communities. The CreateAbility tool provides additional opportunities for people with I/DD to explore jobs they may not have considered, such as restaurant and food service, hospitality, grocery retail and landscaping.

According to day program staff, the CreateAbility resource opens “a world of possibilities” by helping individuals learn more about the tasks and expectations associated with different types of jobs.

Supporting Career Opportunities

Monarch purchased the CreateAbility software for $2,500 through an internal grant program funded by community donors. Each year, Monarch staff submit project ideas that could benefit the people they support. A committee reviews these requests and awards funding to selected projects.

The primary goal of CreateAbility is to help participants explore career paths, understand required skills and assess job expectations in areas that interest them. Day program staff guide individuals in using the software on laptops, desktop computers or cell phones.

Participants begin with an online assessment to identify their areas of interest. The program includes short, tailored videos that explain different jobs and the tasks involved. The process also evaluates a participant’s current skills and identifies areas where additional training may be needed, such as memory improvement or following step-by-step instructions.

Building Confidence and Job Skills

CreateAbility provides a final analysis that combines the participant’s self-assessment with input from support staff. The program suggests potential job opportunities and outlines the next steps for individuals, including additional training or one-on-one support.

Day program staff report that CreateAbility not only prepares participants for future jobs but also boosts their self-esteem by highlighting their strengths. Participants who complete the program often feel more confident and capable of pursuing their career goals.

The tool is also beneficial in identifying how staff can provide ongoing support to ensure success in the workplace. According to staff, the software “gives them the knowledge they need about the job and what it takes to be successful before they actually start working.”

A Step Toward Employment

One of the most rewarding aspects of the program is the pride participants feel when they earn their CreateAbility certificate. Completing the program helps individuals feel prepared to take the next step toward finding a job. Day program staff continue to support participants by inviting guest speakers to discuss job opportunities and updating individual goals based on the skills and interests identified through CreateAbility.
