October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to highlight the value of inclusive hiring practices and celebrate the accomplishments of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in the workforce. 

The Benefits of Employment for Individuals with I/DD

Dexter Nelson: Finding Pride in Work

Dexter Nelson, a resident of Monarch’s Schooner Shores Group Home, has worked at a Beaufort Burger King for over three years. Known locally as “The Burger King Man,” Nelson takes pride in his role, maintaining the dining room and restrooms with the assistance of a job coach. “I like working and meeting new people,” Nelson shares. His dedication and enthusiasm are well-known in the community.

Joanne Vincent: Teamwork and Milestones 

Joanne Vincent has been a valued employee at Moore’s Olde Tyme Barbeque Chicken & Seafood in New Bern since 2016. With support from Monarch staff, Vincent has grown in her role, helping to maintain the dining room and serve customers. “I love working with a team,” she says. Vincent’s mother, a former waitress, provided guidance that has helped her excel.

Michael Dover: Building Confidence 

Michael Dover works at Harris Teeter in Winston-Salem, assisting customers by carrying groceries to their cars. With support from Monarch staff, Dover found a role that matches his strengths and interests. “It feels good to have a job. It makes me feel proud,” he says. Dover’s success story highlights the importance of persistence and finding a good fit.

Maggie Stiller: Serving with a Smile

Maggie Stiller has been employed at Wendy’s in New Bern for over a year. Encouraged by her development specialist, Stiller applied for the position and now excels at keeping the dining room clean and assisting with washing. “I love working at Wendy’s because everyone is friendly,” she says. Stiller’s positive attitude and commitment to her work inspire those around her.
