Each September, we join organizations across the nation in celebrating Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week — a special time to honor the compassionate, dedicated professionals who empower people to live their best lives. At Monarch, DSPs and other staff providing direct support are at the heart of what Monarch does. They teach skills, foster independence, encourage inclusion and create opportunities for personal growth.
Kicking off the Week
We launched DSP Recognition Week by sharing our excitement and setting the stage for the days ahead. Throughout the week, we highlighted stories of compassion and dedication from across Monarch, showing how DSPs bring encouragement, creativity and steady support to the people we serve. We also used the week as an opportunity to provide information about how others can join this meaningful line of work and make a lasting impact.
Adventures with Michael “Mr. Mike” Taylor
At our Beach Club day program in Manteo, Michael “Mr. Mike” Taylor has been building strong connections for more than four years. His relationship with Ronnie, one of the people he supports, was clear during the adaptive camp at Jennette’s Pier as they conquered climbing walls and obstacle courses together. Their trust and teamwork show how DSPs provide encouragement that helps individuals grow in confidence and thrive.
Honoring Gwen Jones
Gwen Jones, a Developmental Specialist at the Camden Enrichment Center, has spent the past seven years pouring compassion and patience into her work. She builds meaningful connections and fosters an environment where people feel valued and included. Whether she’s doing crafts with Wendy Copeland or offering encouragement, Gwen embodies the spirit of dedication that defines DSPs.
Spotlight on LaVonna Avent
At the Bladen Opportunities Unlimited day program, LaVonna Avent has spent more than four years helping individuals build independence and confidence. Her Q&A gave us a behind-the-scenes look at her role, showing what inspires her most and what keeps her motivated as a DSP.
As DSP Recognition Week came to a close, we reflected on the compassion, patience and dedication of DSPs across Monarch. Their work transforms lives and strengthens communities, and we are deeply grateful for the difference they make every single day.
