Celebrating Direct Support Professionals: Sept. 8-14 is DSP Recognition Week

Direct support professionals enable people with disabilities to live in their own communities by assisting them with their daily affairs and intimate needs: medications, meals, dressing, mobility, vocational training, respite care and other in-home services. As recognition week is observed, please take some time to demonstrate how much you appreciate our direct support team and the tremendous differences they make in people’s and families’ lives.

Did you know? DSP Workforce Facts

• More than 300,000 Americans with disabilities are languishing on waiting lists for desperately needed services. The average wait is 8-10 years.
• By 2020, an estimated 1.2 million DSPs will be needed to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, an increase of 37 percent or roughly 323,000 jobs.
• DSP turnover averages 38 percent in the private sector compared with 15 percent among their state-employed counterparts. High turnover greatly reduced the consistency and quality of supports received by people with disabilities.
